Artist Feature // 5 Questions for Larry Horowitz

Larry's landscape work feels like somewhere I've been and absolutely loved.

I found Larry Horowitz as I was scrolling online. It was hard to not stop on his work β€“ it’s arrestingly beautiful.

Larry was born in New York and is represented by local galleries in the area as well as many others across the country. He has had a long and storied career as a landscape painter, and refers to himself “striving to paint the vanishing American landscape.” Each painting is a moment in time.

To me, his work feels like somewhere I’ve been and loved. You can feel the seasons – and the warmth or coolness – through the vibrant colors. His paintings have an almost meditative quality to them that allow me to stare for hours.

I enjoyed working with Larry. Learn more about him and read my Q&A, below.

Meet Larry!

5 Questions for Larry Horowitz

1) What is your favorite kind of work to do at the moment?

I don’t have a particular favorite type of landscape. I just love to paint. I love the smells, textures, and colors of paint but above all it is the challenge that has kept me going for the last 40 years. I always like to work on multiple paintings simultaneously. Right now, I am putting the final touches on the work that will be on display at my one man exhibition in New York City at the Franklin Bowles Gallery in Soho this April. I am also finishing work for other upcoming shows.

2) What kinds of things inspire you?

I am inspired by the randomness in nature.

3) Who else do you admire in the art space?

I feel modern art is trying too hard and has lost its way. I am inspired by almost any work of art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

4) Coolest possession?

Although I have collected many antiques over the years, I would say my favorite one is a rusted lithographed tin painting of the Kaiserina Augusta Victoria, an ocean liner painted by Fred Pansing. I bought it at a flea market for nine dollars when I was 10 years old. My father laid out the money and I paid him back a dollar a week.

5) Favorite quote or words to live by?

Whatever you do, don’t lose your inner child.
