Minimalist Modern Cabins

Five modern retreats to ride out the winter.

It’s still winter, but one thought that always warms me up is thinking of cozying up in a serene, modern cabin that is designed for the elements and fine-tuned for relaxing! Below are five modern retreats to escape inside.

Kicking Horse Ski House

Canadian Rocky Mountains // 2011, Bohlin Cywinski Jackson

A modernist-meets-Nordic mountain lodge. Located at the base of Kicking Horse ski resort, adjacent to a ski trail and surrounded by a forest of aspen and spruce, the house is two connected parts — one containing the sleeping and bath spaces, and the other living and dining areas oriented toward views of the peaks.

The Aspvik House

Stockholm // 2015, Andreas Martin-Löf

Located in the Stockholm archipelago with panoramic views and an infinity pool to help you enjoy them! The interior is raw and minimal, with an interesting juxtoposition created between raw plywood and intricate details like Nero Marquina marble and polished brass.

The Nami Project

Vancouver Island // 2023

I was interested in this one because it is actually a resort! Located near the crashing waves of the Pacific, it features four stand-alone cabins and a boutique hotel of four suites. The design was influenced by Japanese, Scandinavian, and Pacific Northwest sensibilities and aims to provide a submersive and restorative experience. So incredibly serene.

Oisterwijk

The Netherlands // 2013, Bedaux de Brouwer Architects

This is a uniquely shaped long, single path home, measuring 26 by 6 meters. It’s situatied on a natural woodlands reserve and I love the juxtaposition of the dark-stained exterior with gorgeous light interiors. The shape of the house is deceptively simple, but the back opens up with all-glass views towards the private wooded area.

Whitney Island Farm Retreat

Whidbey Island, WA // 2019, MW Works

Obsessed with this one inside and out! Carefully built within a grove of Douglas Firs, the Whidbey Island retreat is a series of connected pavilions using glass, metal and stacked stone. Conceived to host visits for groups of family members and friends, the home embraces both communal and individual spaces. Perfection.
