The Sunday Seven 11.04.18

Happy Sunday! Here’s this week’s roundup in wine, food, lifestyle, design and travel.

Hello, friends…I hope you have all had a great week! I haven’t been on here too much this past week due to work travel, but will get back on schedule next week 😄 Here’s this Sunday’s seven in wine, food, lifestyle, design and travel:

The Perfect Underwater Bungalow

Is there anyone else here that has always wanted to stay in one of those awesome looking overwater bungalows? This article breaks down four locations in Tahiti for comparison. Interestingly, the origin of these creations was in French Polynesia where the first such bungalow hotel was reported some 50 years ago. Inspired by Tahitian fishermen’s huts, resort owners hit upon the overwater bungalow as a way to reel in guests since they didn’t have a beach.

Wine & Weed?

A super-interesting read about cannabis, which is now recreationally legal in nine US states, Washington DC, and in several other countries. With the rapid legislative changes projected for cannabis over the next 50 years, beverage producers are turning their attention on to a way to bottle and drink it, and this article explores what this trend will do to the wine and beer industry. Since drinks made with cannabis won’t be fermented, they won’t rival the aroma and flavor of wine, so nothing is replacing what I’m drinking anytime soon!

A bottle of the 1945 Romanee-Conti fetched $558,000 at a Sotheby’s auction in New York

Quite The Investment

A bottle of 1945 Romanee-Conti wine was sold for a new record sum of $558,000 at an auction held by Sotheby’s recently in New York. If you don’t know the name, Romanee-Conti is a good one to drop as it is widely considered the best Burgundy wine on the market. The domaine, located in the Cote de Nuits, at the northern end of the Cote d’Or region of Burgundy, produces on average between 5,000 and 6,000 bottles per year. The house’s upper estimate for the first bottle of Romanee-Conti was $32,000, meaning they had quite underestimated the power of the auction!

The Stuff Architecture-Wine Dreams Are Made Of

How absolutely gorgeous is this winery in Provence by Architect Carl Fredrik Svenstedt? The facade is made of one-ton stone blocks, which are staggered in places to let the beautiful light in. This is winemaker Les Domaine Ott’s Château de Selle estate, which is located in the iconic Côtes de Provence region near the Mediterranean coast. The estate, which was the first site purchased by Ott’s company in 1912, aims to capture some of this heritage in its use of stone extracted from nearby Roman-era quarries. Take me there!

These Things ARE Equal

This read made me laugh because I’ve definitely done this — you need to measure out a cup of liquid and all you have is a dry measuring cup. The horror! But let’s just point out here — cup is a cup is a cup is a cup, they all measure the same whether wet or dry, and therefore, are interchangeable!

If you all don’t already know about this one, my favorite measuring cup is linked here. The OXO Angled Measuring Cup is pretty revolutionary in that you don’t have to crouch down to counter-level to see what you poured…with this cup, you have a way to measure by simply peering down into the top of the cup!

For Other Modern, Low-Slung Architecture Fans

When it comes to modern homes, low-slung architecture is where the style has evolved. Typically focused on one-story living or building out rather than up, sleek modern style emerges from the landscape and unfolds with patios, pools, walkways and landscaping. As you know from my post this past week showing our home, I am a huge personal fan of this type of architecture and this is the type of thing we searched for so long for here in Charlotte. Here are 23 other modern-inspirational homes!

Are We Ready For The Holidays?!

Ready or not, Thanksgiving is almost here! If you need some inspiration for your contributions for the big day, I got a couple of good ideas from this list of recipes this past week. Being a pescetarian, that means no turkey for me so I am extra-focused on all the many delicious sides at Thanksgiving! Bon Appétit!

I hope everyone has a wonderful and relaxing rest of your weekend!

I have been loving French 75's since our trip to St. Martin! 🍾⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I enjoyed the story behind this, after I did a bit of research. The inspiration for the name of the French 75 was apparently a 75mm field gun used by the French and the Americans in WWI. The French 75 is said to have such a kick that it felt like being hit by just such a weapon.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Consisting of gin, fresh lemon juice, sugar and Champagne, the drink is a lot friendlier than the name implies!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I had so much fun at @thefoodieschoolclt.
We made Fettuccini Carbonara with Peas, Ricotta Gnocchi with Fresh Pesto, and Olive Oil Cake with Lemon Glaze. It was so yummy, y’all! You can BYOB (which would have been a sin not to!) and my friend Kate and I drank @bellaunionwine, which always pairs well.

If you are looking for a fun thing to do with friends or your partner, an evening at the Foodie School is such a clever idea. Mara and Aleks were our chefs and hosts and they are both amazing! I can’t wait to go back and try out a different menu!
