I came across Charlotte Foust, appropriately enough, in Charlotte! I saw her work in a gallery and was interested in learning more about her. Charlotte works in mixed media: graphite, acrylic and collage, allowing her layer and create beautiful textured surfaces. She creates what she calls “non-objective paintings.” To me, they are abstract, with a dramatic yet delightful quality to them. Get my Q&A with Charlotte below!

5 Questions for Charlotte Foust
1) What is your favorite kind of work to do at the moment?
I’ve been working on a new body of abstract paintings. I am exploring looser line work , combined with larger, bold mark-making at the moment. I love the back and forth of the varied marks that build up an interesting surface.
2) What kinds of things inspire you?
I am inspired by life and nature. Everyday, good and…the not so good, is inspiring and a gift . I go into the studio with an open mind and I work intuitively without plans, and if you show up everyday and work hard the effort pays off. I live in rural NC, so I surround myself with art books, magazines and my phone to keep up with the art world.
3) Who else do you admire in the art space?
I admire a lot of working artists that I am honored to exhibit with in galleries across the country and love all the artists from the abstract expressionist movement— DeKooning, Mitchell, Kline…
4) Coolest possession?
Well, blast from the past, but my coolest possession would be a white milk glass collection which is so traditional compared to being an abstract painter. And my iPhone that keeps me in touch with the world!
5) Favorite quote or words to live by?
I love inspirational quotes and have quite a few hanging in studio — probably my favorite is simply this:
“Follow your bliss.”
